Paul Bender

Paul Bender, Professor of Law and Emeritus Dean at the College of Law, authored a spread in the Arizona Business Magazine, outlining the state’s top 10 court cases affecting both Arizonans and the nation.

Bender listed the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Miranda v. Arizona (1966), which established the legal precedent for “Miranda warnings” to be stated prior to questioning suspects by police, as the top case in Arizona of national importance.

Other cases mentioned are In re Gault (1967), dealing with juveniles’ rights to due process, and Arizona v. California (1963), which establishes Arizona water rights to the Colorado River.

Bender teaches courses on U.S. and Arizona constitutional law. He has written extensively about constitutional law, intellectual property and Indian law, and is coauthor of the two-volume casebook/treatise, Political and Civil Rights in the United States. Bender has argued more than 20 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and actively participates in constitutional litigation in federal and state courts.
