Associate Clinical Professor Kimberly Holst recently gave a presentation at the Academics Promoting the Pedagogy of Effective Advocacy in Law (APPEAL) Conference in Mtunzini, South Africa. Her Dec. 9 presentation which was titled “Using Rubics to Manage Large Classes and Maximize Student Feedback” was part of the concurrent sessions available at the conference which was titled : “PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE PRACTICE OF LAW: HELPING STUDENTS DEVELOP THEIR ABILITY TO READ AND WRITE IN ENGLISH”

Paul Bender weighs in on Supreme Court’s acceptance of SB 1070 case

Professor Paul Bender recently appeared on ‘Horizon’ on PBS-TV (Channel 8) to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case on SB1070, Arizona’s immigration law. Bender was interviewed by Jóse Cárdenas, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Arizona State University, who was the guest host for the Dec. 12 show.

Weinstein joins in Supreme Court amicus brief in free speech case

James Weinstein, Amelia Lewis Professor of Constitutional Law at the College of Law, has along with Eugene Volokh, a prominent UCLA law professor and noted free speech expert, filed an amicus brief in United States v. Alvarez, arguing in favor of the constitutionality of the Stolen Valor Act, a law making it a crime to falsely claim that one has been awarded a United States military decoration or medal. The brief, of which Volokh is the principal author and to which Weinstein contributed, urges the Court to hold that, with certain limitations, one does not have a First Amendment right to make a knowingly false statement of fact.
