James G. Hodge Jr.

An article by James G. Hodge Jr., ASU Lincoln Professor of Health Law and Ethics and Director of the College of Law’s Public Health Law and Policy Program, has been published in the September 2011 issue of The Journal of Legal Medicine.

“Prescribing Authority During Emergencies: Challenges for Mental Health Care Providers” explains how the prescribing authority of these professionals can be impacted during emergencies. Hodge and his co-authors review existing prescribing authority under state and federal law for physicians, nurses, physician assistants and psychologists, and discuss challenges to the continuity of prescription that likely is to take place during emergencies. They also offer recommendations to address those challenges.

The article was co-authored by Assistant Professor Lainie Rutkow, and Professor Jon Vernick, in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Professor Lawrence Wissow, in the Department of Health, Behavior and Society, and Christopher Kaufmann, of the Department of Mental Health, all at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
