Joel Garreau

When Professor Joel Garreau co-created Emerge earlier this year, one of his main goals was “getting both sides of the brain to work together,” and according to ASU Magazine, he and his colleagues are doing just that.

The article, titled “Future Forward,” explores the recent projects Emerge worked on. Staff writer Tracy Mueller lists things like empathetic robots, pollution-eating microbes and monkey-telepathy in the story, which features interviews with Garreau, as well as his “co-conspirators,” Professor Cynthia Stein, with the ASU School of Sustainability, and Thanassis Rikakis, former director of the ASU School of Art, Media and Engineering.

“There is no one path to truth,” Garreau said. "It’s not like the astrophysicists have a lock on wisdom, any more than the poets do.”

Emerge aims to bring different types of academia at ASU together to answer questions too big for any single field of study, like, “How does technology shape who we are?” and “What does it mean to be human?”
