An article by College of Law Clinical Professor Sarah Buel, which encourages Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in the waning days of its session, was published on the Opinions page of The Arizona Republic on Thursday, Dec. 13.

The “My Turn” article titled, “Congress must fund Violence Against Women Act,” lists five reasons it should be supported, including staggering statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice that about four American women are murdered every day by a current or former partner.

VAWA funds programs that provide life-and-death services to female and male victims of domestic violence, such as medical care, housing and economic security, judicial and law-enforcement tools and help for high-risk Native American women, Buel wrote.

Buel helped draft the original act which was passed in 1994 and reauthorized in 2000 and 2005. She is the Faculty Director of the Ruth V. McGregor Family Protection Clinic at the College of Law and Founding Director of the Diane Halle Center for Family Justice.
