The ABA Journal, the flagship magazine of the American Bar Association, has named Ruth Carter, founder of the Carter Law Firm and a 2011 graduate of the College of Law, as one of its 2012 “Legal Rebels.” A Phoenix attorney, Carter made the list for her work in flash mob law.

“In a very short amount of time as a member of the State Bar, Ruth has carved out a unique niche in the Arizona legal community, and we are proud of her for this well-deserved recognition,” said Dean Douglas Sylvester.

A co-founder of Improv AZ, an award-winning flash mob troupe in Phoenix, Carter has thoroughly examined the legalities of organizing and performing in flash mobs since the troupe’s conception in 2009.

“I am very humbled and honored to be added to this illustrious group,” said Carter. “I looked up to the Legal Rebels when I was a law student. They helped me embrace the idea that there’s more than one way to be an attorney.”

Known for wearing custom T-shirts instead of suits, the outspoken 32-year-old attorney has helped organize and participated in more than a dozen flash mobs in the valley, including the annual No Pants Light Rail Ride every January.

“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes before, during, and after a flash mob,” Carter said. “It’s my job to make sure the organizers and participants aren’t setting themselves up to get sued or arrested.”

Prior to law school, Carter earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling from Oregon State University. She opened Carter Law Firm in January 2012 where she specializes in business formation, intellectual property, Internet law and flash mob law. She was a finalist for the 2011 Phoenix New Times Big Brain Awards for her work with Improv AZ. Carter spoke earlier this year on flash mob law at the American Bar Association TechShow in Chicago.

Carter blogs weekly for The Undeniable Ruth and Carter Law Firm and biweekly for Attorney at Work. She is a regular speaker at various events for professionals and entrepreneurs.
