Program on Law and Sustainability

The Program on Law and Sustainability at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law is designed to be a hub for innovative thinking about the laws, regulations and incentives needed to bring about a more sustainable future. The program, which is one of the first of its kind in the nation and is housed within the Center for Law, Science & Innovation, will bring together professors and students from the College of Law, as well as the ASU School of Sustainability, to work on the legal issues of the day surrounding renewable energy, renewable energy transmission, energy efficiency, energy storage, water conservation, greenhouse gas regulation, air quality regulation and transportation among many other topics. The Program will soon become a go-to-resource for corporations, non-profits and governments that are increasingly seeking to navigate and prosper in the new energy world we live in, and will become a valuable resource for law students as they begin their journey into sustainability law. In the future, the Program will be a part of an effort at ASU to construct joint J.D. and Masters and J.D. and Ph.D. degrees offered in conjunction with the School of Sustainability, helping to fulfill the growing demand for cross-cutting education in sustainability.

The Program on Law and Sustainability is directed by former Arizona Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes. Mayes served as an Arizona Corporation Commissioner from 2003 to 2010, where she was also its Chairman for two years. During her tenure at the ACC, Mayes co-authored Arizona’s Renewable Energy Standard, and was a driving force behind the Commission’s adoption of one of the nation’s most ambitious Electric Energy Efficiency Standards. As a Commissioner, Mayes also focused on renewable energy transmission, water conservation and pipeline safety issues.
