OVERVIEW
The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University’s Sports and Entertainment Law Students Association (SELSA) will host the 2nd Annual Conference on Sports and Entertainment Law on Saturday, November 5, 2011. SELSA’s 2011 Conference will address the major current and developing issues surrounding professional and amateur sports as well as the entertainment industry.
The Keynote Speaker for the Conference is Michael Bidwill. A former federal prosecutor and the current President of the Arizona Cardinals, Bidwill will discuss his experience in the legal profession and how it has affected his career as the head of an NFL franchise, including his recent involvement in the collective bargaining agreement negotiation during the lockout.
This event is open to the public.

CONFERENCE RECEPTION - Robbie Fox’s, Mill Avenue
PANEL AND PANELIST OVERVIEW
KEYNOTE SPEAKER - MICHAEL BIDWILL
After practicing law for six years as a federal prosecutor, Michael Bidwill joined the Cardinals organization in 1996 as Vice President/General Counsel and today serves as team President. In that time, no one has been more influential in steering the organization on the path that has led to back-to-back NFC West titles and the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance. In addition to guiding the Cardinals, Bidwill has also taken on an ever-increasing role in the National Football League and the greater Phoenix business community as well. In 2007, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell appointed Michael to the league’s Business Ventures Committee, one of the NFL’s most prominent.
Within the league, Michael chairs the NFL Security Advisory Committee, a group of eight club executives that oversees and develops best security practices for NFL facilities. He additionally serves on Arizona’s Super Bowl Host Committee which successfully staged Super Bowl XLII at University of Phoenix Stadium and will seek to bring the game back to the state. Bidwill is also a member of the board for the Pat Tillman Foundation.

PANEL #1 – Gene Doping & Drug Testing Panel
The doping epidemic has hit the sports field with many legal repercussions. This panel will focus on the doping epidemic in sport over the past half-century, which includes the introduction of truly effective doping drugs like amphetamines, anabolic steroids and blood-boosting. Additionally, the panelists will discuss the current hot-button issue of genetic doping, which could be the most dangerous and undetectable tool available to athletes yet.

PANEL #2 – PUBLICITY AND DEFAMATION PANEL
Social media and entertainment news sources have opened the door for anonymous users to publish defamatory information about performers, TV projects, movies and more. Meanwhile, some clients bring bad publicity upon themselves. This panel will also cover Right of Publicity cases for celebrities, including Kim Kardashian’s suit against Old Navy, Muhammad Ali’s suit over "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee," Mike Tyson's suit over Hangover II’s face tattoo, as well as those for political figures, specifically "Obama Got Osama" products hitting the marketplace and Donald Trump's presidential bid.

Copyright and fair use issues have recently sprung up surrounding digital media and user-generated content. This discussion will include modern technology’s impact on traditional business models and how contracts should be written and negotiated to fit those technologies such as online video-on-demand.

PANEL #4 – COLLECTIVE BARGAINING Panel
The NFL and MLB recently re-negotiated their collective bargaining agreements. The NBA is currently locked out over a dispute and the NHL may be next in line. This panel will take a comparative look at the instances of past lockouts and negotiations, what went right and wrong, and how future negotiations can and should be approached.

The state of the economy has had a major impact on professional sports. Several teams have recently utilized the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to protect themselves. All three panelists were involved in the Phoenix Coyotes Bankruptcy case and will discuss the recent filings of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Dodgers and more.

PANEL #7 – AMATEURISM PANEL
The NCAA has begun to face the tremendous difficulties with what it means to be an “amateur” in such cases as Sam Keller v. Electronic Arts and Ed O’Bannon v. NCAA. This panel will discuss how different sports organizations define “amateur” and how regulatory bodies and athletic departments work to comply with such guidelines. Panelists will also cover the antitrust allegations facing the Bowl Championship Series and the omnipresent issues surrounding sports agent regulation.

Speakers will be shuttled to Robbie Fox’s from ASU as well as from the Reception back to their hotel rooms.
